Special Issue: Democracy Promotion and the Challenges of Illiberal Regional Powers
News from Apr 17, 2015
A special issue of the journal Democratization edited by Nelli Babayan and Thomas Risse has been published. It analyzes the reactions of illiberal regional powers to democracy promotion by the European Union and the United States. The special issue examines in detail the challenges by three illiberal regional powers—China, Russia, and Saudi Arabia—to Western efforts at democracy promotion. The various contributions specifically analyze their actions in Ethiopia and Angola in the case of China, Georgia and Ukraine in the case of Russia, and Tunisia in the case of Saudi Arabia. The conclusions by Tanja A. Börzel discuss the theoretical and policy implications of the special issue’s findings.
