Abstract: Following the French Duty of Vigilance Law and the German Supply Chain Due Diligence Law, the European Union (EU) recently passed new legislation for its 27 member states to foster sustainable and responsible corporate behavior throughout global supply chains. Based on the demands of the largest environmental non-governmental organizations in Europe, the article examines the extent to which the new legislations address environmental burden shifting through international trade. Our empirical material includes campaign and legislative documents, expert interviews and participatory observations. Our results show a regulatory 'race to the top' with 'bends' in the sense that the German law lags behind the French law in some aspects, but the new CSDDD is the most precise and comprehensive in all aspects of supply chain legislation. We can therefore expect a 'greening' of international trade.
