Die International Communication Association (ICA), mit etwa 3.500 Mitgliedern die größte Vereinigung der Kommunikationswissenschaft, hat Prof. Dr. Barbara Pfetsch bei ihrer Jahrestagung im Mai 2017 in San Diego zum Fellow ernannt. Der Fellow-Status in der ICA gilt als eine Anerkennung für hervorragende wissenschaftliche Leistungen im Bereich der Kommunikationswissenschaft.

In der Laudatio für Barbara Pfetsch heißt es: »She has made significant contributions to the study of media and journalism, comparative political communication cultures, the European public sphere, and online social mobilization. Her recent work involves modeling network structures and issue frame alignments in online political networks, making significant progress on the tricky problem of identifying conditions that affect the spillover of networked issue frames into mainstream news media. Among the distinguishing qualities of all of her work are the comparative frameworks that cross language and political boundaries in different nations. Her impressive service to the field includes building programs nationally and internationally, including strengthening the field of communication in Germany and in Europe«
