Prof. Clarkson was one of Canada’s most preeminent scholars, focusing on the evolution of North America as a continental state and the impact of globalization and trade liberalization on middle powers. He had received numerous research awards and grants and had published a tremendous amount of books, book chapters and research papers, including publications such as Uncle Sam and Us: Globalization, Neoconservatism and the Canadian State and Global Governance and the Semi-peripheral State: The WTO and NAFTA as Canada's External Constitution.

Clarkson held degrees from the universities of Toronto, Oxford (as a Rhodes Scholar) and Paris-Sorbonne. He was a senior fellow at Massey College in Toronto and the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) in Waterloo, Ontario. Furthermore, he was elected as a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and had received the highest honour of Canada in being a member of the “Order of Canada”.

In 2013 Steve Clarkson won the Konrad Adenauer Research Award  for his research on regional diffusion of (and resistance to) rules and institutions promoting transnational corporations' investments in the Euro-American Triangle.

Stephen Clarkson stayed at the KFG for several months in 2012, 2014 and 2015.

He died on February 28, 2016 in Freiburg, Germany.
