Workshop II “Peripheries in Competition? The Politics and Political Economy of Convergence and Divergence in the European Union”
The project takes the perspective that there have been long-standing developmental, political and institutional divisions within Europe—both between East and West and between North and South. The central question the project is asking is whether membership in the European Union upends earlier patterns of domination, subordination, competitiveness, democratic practice and relative backwardness, or whether enduring historical and structural trends overwhelm the EU’s influence.
