Abstract:
This article examines two questions based on data from the pension statistics: Are there any differences between the extent of retirement migration and the amount of old-age pensions paid out by the German pension insurance scheme for people with Turkish, Italian and Greek citizenship? Can socio-economic factors in particular be identified as influencing different forms of retirement migration? The results show that more than seven out of ten people with Italian citizenship move to their country of origin after retirement, for people with Greek citizenship it is around one in two, and for people with Turkish citizenship only just under one in five pensions is transferred to Turkey. In addition, it can be seen across all groups that above-average pension payment amounts from the statutory pension insurance scheme encourage people to remain resident in Germany. The opposite is true for low pension entitlements, but the stability of the political and economic conditions in the country of departure also play a role here.
