Presentation and discussion by Prof. Kirit Parikh

Prof. Dr. Kirit Parikh will give a talk on India's strategies for a transition to a low carbon economy. The event will be held at the conference room of the Academic Senate on the first floor of the Henry-Ford-Bau at the FU Berlin, Garystraße 35. (For directions, please check this website: http://fu-berlin.de/service/orientierung/hfb/index.html)

Prof. Parikh is the chairman of the Indian Prime Minister's Expert Group on Low Carbon Strategies for Inclusive Growth. Throughout his distinguished career, he has served as an  advisor to many Indian Prime Ministers and to the United Nations Development Programme. He is also the founding director of the Indira Gandhi Institute for Development Research in Mumbai. The Expert Group recently published published its interim report on low carbon strategies which can be found online at: http://planningcommission.nic.in/reports/genrep/Inter_Exp.pdf

Here is the abstract of the talk he will give:

Though not responsible for creating the threat of climate change, India is highly vulnerable to it. Thus it has a strong interest in a just and fair global compact to reduce that threat. India has therefore taken a number of unilateral steps. Our Prime Minister at Heiligendamm expressed India's determination never to exceed its per capita emissions above that of industrialised countries. At Copenhagen India promised to reduce its emission intensity by 20-25  % by 2020 compared with 2005. The expert group that I chair has recommended a strategy that is already incorporated in the Approach to The 12th Five Year Plan document and we expect that the Plan document will reflect a strategy for low carbon inclusive growth. The opportunities of increasing energy efficiency, reducing energy needs and promoting cleaner technologies in different sectors such as lighting, appliances, equipment, power generation, industries, commercial buildings and transport sector will be described along with scope of reduction and possible policies to attain it.
