Berlin Sustainability Talk: Reduced CO2 emissions through less deforestation - Chances and challenges of REDD as an instrument of climate change mitigation from a governance perspective
Lecture and discussion with Dr.Markus Lederer, Universität Potsdam
In 2005 Costa Rica and Papua New Guinea (re)introduced the idea of compensation payments for reduced CO2 emissions through avoided deforestation to the international discussion. Since then, the clear cutting of tropical rain forests and their potential contribution to climate protection have been at the centre of the climate debate.
In his talk Markus Lederer will explain the background of this change and discuss the challenges for governance resulting from this development. He will especially focus on the question which (positive) lessons can be learned from already existing governance mechanisms and which conclusions can be drawn from REDD for international climate policies.
