Forschung
Birdals Hauptforschungsinteressen erstrecken sich auf die Bereiche Theorie der internationalen Beziehungen, feministische Theorie, Queer-Theorie, politische Theorie und historische Soziologie. Birdal ist der Autor von The Holy Roman Empire and the Ottomans: From Global Imperial Power to Absolutist States (2011, türkische Übersetzung 2016), einer vergleichenden Studie über frühneuzeitliche Staatsbildung und Staatssysteme. Er hat über Themen wie geopolitische Doktrinen, Autoritarismus, psychologische Kriegsführung/Aufstandsbekämpfung, Queer Politics und Übergangsjustiz in der Türkei geschrieben.
Birdals DFG-Forschungsprojekt trägt den Titel Sexualwissenschaft, Selbstbestimmung und Transnationalismus: Global Scripts of the Early Homosexual Movements in Germany (1865-1969). Es untersucht den Zusammenhang zwischen Naturrecht, Souveränität und Geopolitik bei der Entstehung der Homosexuellenbewegung, indem es die folgenden Fragen aufwirft: Wie und warum wird Sexualität von Reformbewegungen in kritischen Momenten der Staatsbildung und internationalen Ordnung formuliert/reformiert? Welchen Einfluss haben Transnationalismus und Sexualwissenschaft auf die Erfindung und Verbreitung von sexuellen Identitäten und Gerechtigkeitsansprüchen? Welche Auswirkungen haben die Veränderungen in den internationalen Beziehungen auf die Sexualpolitik?
Birdal trat 2011 dem LGBTQA Caucus der International Studies Association bei und veröffentlichte mehrere Artikel über queere Politik in Einzel- und Gemeinschaftsprojekten auf Türkisch und auf Englisch. Diese Artikel untersuchen queere Herausforderungen für die Geschichtsschreibung der Republik Türkei, die Grenzen des liberalen Rechtsdiskurses für LGBTI+-Integration in der Türkei, die Auswirkungen der Gezi-Proteste 2013 auf die Opportunitätsstruktur von queerem Aktivismus in der Türkei und die verschiedenen Arten homophober staatlicher Repression in der Türkei, Tunesien, Ägypten und dem Libanon nach 2011.
