Research Project

„‘Democracy‘ beyond the West: Theories, Discourses, Attitudes” (special issue 2016 of the German journal Politische Vierteljahresschrift (PVS), edited by Sophia Schubert and Alexander Weiß)

This book project addresses the question of how democracy is conceived of beyond the West. More precisely: How is democracy conceptualized in non-western theories as well as in non-westernpolitical discourses and which conceptions of democracy do non-western peoples’ attitudes mirror? This is a pressing question as German political science still mainly focusses on western conceptions of democracy although people all over the world do think about democracy. Increasing migration both of persons and ideas as well as new cases of (un)successful democratization (e.g. in the ‘Arab Spring’) and emerging global perspectives in the social sciences do however back up the claim that theoretical and empirical democracy research should take non-western theories and realities into account. Until now, however, the establishment of an appropriate research field has only been realized in part, also internationally, and it is still fragmented into different debates with different emphases either on non-western political theories, mainly under the label of ‘Comparative Political Theory’ (Dallmayr 1997), or on non-western mass understandings of democracy (cf. e.g. the special issue 2010, 21:4, of the Journal of Democracy). The present book project thus pursues two aims: First, it aims at connecting German political research to these international debates and, second, a dialogue shall be stimulated between researchers who are embedded in three different research traditions in order to sound out the chances of their respective perspectives’ complementing each other to build up a new interdisciplinary research field: Political theorists who investigate into non-western traditions of democratic thought and philosophers’ theories of democracy, area specialists who mainly explore non-western political elites’ and social movements’ discourses on democracy as well as political culture researchers who analyze non-western mass democratic attitudes and understandings of democracy.

The authors have met in order to present their contributions’ first drafts at the University of Hamburg from 18 to 20 March 2015 (please find the conference program here) and the book has been published by Nomos in 2016. The project was partly funded by the Fritz Thyssen Foundation.
