Project description
Growing global energy consumption, constantly rising prices for energy and the impact of climate change call for a rapid expansion of renewable energies worldwide. By appointment of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, the consortium Adelphi Consult – FFU Berlin supports the intentions of the German Federal Government to found an International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
As a first step, a preparatory conference with 170 participants from 60 countries took place in the German Foreign Office in Berlin from 9 to 11 April 2008. Workshops on the work programme and the statutes followed at the end of June/beginning of July. A two-days diplomatic conference was held on 23./24. October 2008 in Madrid.
The founding and signing conference is planned for the 26./27. January 2009. Considering the magnitude and urgency of the tasks IRENA faces, many states agreed that the agency commences operating and establishing effective working structures right after its foundation.
