ABSTRACT:
The affective turn has influenced migration and communication researchers and shifted theoretical attention towards emotion as constitutive practice, discursive economy, and materiality shaping social relations, politics, and moral order. Scholars are just starting to explore the intersections between new technologies, affect, and emotive practice, especially in relation to the migratory movement of people. The talk takes up the pressing issue of forced migration in(to) Europe and illustrates how culturally situated emotive practice becomes mobile and intersects, amplifies, and competes with media and legal practices which create the forced migrant as a symbol of suffering as well as the Other who needs to be controlled. The talk also highlights how new technologies become affective agents, disrupting the narrative of the victim and intervening into received moral order.
