Sebastian Sons, M.A., studied Islamic Studies, History and Political Sciences in Berlin and Damascus. Prior to that, he trained as journalist in print, TV and radio media at the Berlin School for Journalists (Berliner Journalisten-Schule). After finishing his studies, he worked as Head of Research and Editor-in-Chief of the academic magazine “Orient” at the German Orient-Institute from 2009-2014 and as a project researcher at the Program Near East and North Africa at the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP) in Berlin. At the moment, he is Associate Fellow at the DGAP. From 2018-2019, he worked as senior researcher for the German think tank CARPO. Since October 2019, he is engaged as advisor in the regional program “Cooperation with Arab Donors” of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH in Jordan and Kuwait. His Ph.D. thesis is entitled “Daily Presence, Public Absence: The Practices, Strategies, and Content of Pakistani Media Actors concerned with Labor Migration to Saudi Arabia”. As an analyst on Saudi Arabian affairs, he was consulted by German political institutions such as the German Bundestag and political foundations as well as by international journalists. He published the book “Built on Sand: Saudi Arabia – A Problematic Ally” (in German).

Daily Presence, Public Absence: The Practices, Strategies, and Content of Pakistani Media Actors concerned with Labor Migration to Saudi Arabia (Publication in German)

This research project examines several Pakistani media actors who want to establish critical visibility of Pakistani migration to Saudi Arabia by means of media exposure. The intention is to show what motivates these actors, and what strategies they use, to get access to the segment of the public concerned about and interested in migration. To separate them from traditional actors in politics, the economy, and mass media, I define this group as multipliers of a new, dynamically developing section of the public within the Pakistani media system that deals with migration.  

This research project uses empirical data to analyze which media practices and strategies the new media actors use to expand these limited spaces: to this end, it presents concrete projects that contribute to the creation of critical visibility of migration to Saudi Arabia in the Pakistani public. 

My academic work is situated at the intersection of regional, communications-focused, and migration policy research disciplines. The empirically collected data were operationalized by means of “Grounded Theory”, so that the analytical representation reflects an actor-centric problematization of the issue. Against this background, the research project presents new results that further develop the theoretical concept of a public sphere for migration in the Pakistani context.
