Ph.D. Jennifer Stromer-Galley from Syracuse University (New Yorck, USA) gives insight in her current research results. Her Weizenbaum Fellow Talk “Logics of Rhetorical Delegitimization of Democratic Institutions: A Case Study of the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election (and its Aftermath)” focus on how presidential rhetoric power shapes public discourse. Using the case of the U.S. Capitol riot on January 6, 2021, she analyzed former president Trumps promotion of a rigged election. She investigates this distinct imaginary with a close textual analysis and data from Twitter, Facebook, and paid political ads on Facebook and Instagram from both Trump and his opponent, Joe Biden. Stromer-Galley unpacks a logic of rhetorical deligitimization using the case of the contested election to examine this problematic threat to democratic institutions.

Biography: Jennifer Stromer-Galley (Ph.D. University of Pennsylvania, 2002), is Senior Associate Dean of Academic and Faculty Affairs in the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University. She is author of Presidential Campaigning in the Internet Age (Oxford University Press, 2019, 2nd Ed.), which examines the ways U.S. presidential campaigns adopt and adapt to digital media communications. She is author of over 70 peer-reviewed publications focusing on strategic communication, public deliberation, and decision-making. She is former president of the Association of Internet Researchers.
